Equipment Requirements ⛸️
We want to create a safe, fun, and positive environment for skaters of all ages and skill levels! Please review the following equipment requirements before your skater’s first session.

❄️ PreCan & CanSkate ❄️
Skates
- Skates must fit snugly and support the ankles upright.
- Check that the skates are not leaning inward or outward while the skater is standing.
- Plastic skates are NOT recommended for any level of learn-to-skate programming.
Blade Care
- Have skate blades sharpened before the first session and again midway through the season if needed.
- Skaters on the ice more than 3 times per week may require more frequent sharpening.
- Dry blades completely after each session.
- Use cloth skate soakers after skating — avoid storing skates with plastic guards on, as this can cause rust.
- Plastic skate guards should only be used when walking off the ice to protect the blades.
- For higher-quality figure skates, be sure to use an experienced figure skate sharpener familiar with figure skate blades, toe picks can be sharpened off if the incorrect technique is used.
Required Safety Equipment
- CSA-approved hockey helmet is mandatory
- Cage is optional
- Please see the Skate Canada Helmet Policy on our Policies page.
Clothing Recommendations
Please send your skater dressed comfortably in:
✔ Mitts or gloves
✔ Light layers of clothing
✔ Clothing that allows free movement
Please Avoid:
- Bulky ski pants (they restrict movement and make learning difficult)
- Shin or knee pads worn outside clothing, as they can slide awkwardly on the ice and create safety concerns
👨👩👧 Parent Information
For insurance reasons, parents are not permitted on the ice at any time.
Our trained Program Assistants are there to help younger skaters stay engaged and comfortable within their groups.
Please note:
- Program Assistants are trained not to pick skaters up when they fall
- Professional coaches will assist when needed
- One of our goals is helping skaters learn to get up independently — with patience and practice, they will get there!
Thank you for helping us create a safe and encouraging skating environment for everyone.
🏒 PrePower & PowerSkating
Power skaters are required to wear:
✔ CSA-approved hockey helmet
✔ Full hockey equipment
✔ Hockey stick
✔ Water bottle
We recommend arriving dressed and ready to go to maximize ice time.
✨ Thank you for being part of our skating community — we can’t wait to see everyone on the ice!
